GirlTip: You Aren't The Exception

GirlTip: Have you ever had a friend who gossiped about other people, or ditched them, or were just inconsistent and unkind to others, and thought to yourself, 'But they won't do that to me?' I am amazed by my own steadfast tendency to see myself as the exception -- my optimism bias, as I believe it's called, deludes me into believing that somehow I won't be hurt. And yet every time I have ever believed this about someone, I have always been proven wrong. The reality is: we are never the exception. We are just waiting in line for our number to come up. Listen to the signals people send to others; it is only a matter of time before they are sent to you. As Maya Angelou so wisely said, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." We might save ourselves some wounded hearts if we followed her advice.
