Have you ever told someone you were upset and she reacted by saying she was the "worst friend" or a bad person? Reacting to someone's difficult truth in this way distracts from the issue. It forces me to make you feel better about yourself. We don't get to talk about the problem I have. Shaming yourself can make it seem like you care, but it actually derails the conversation.
