Heidi's Blog: Hello Internet!
My name is Heidi. Iʼm a high-school senior from New York City. I go to an engineering high school, but my love lies elsewhere - somewhere between the gleaming streets of Science and the misty paths of English. Iʼm on my way to discovering where my loyalties lie, if I have any.Along the way, I have discovered numerous passions. At any moment, there are tons of things I could be doing or getting myself wrapped up in. This school year, I have started a research project on using DNA barcoding to track the progress of turtles, started writing this blog, joined the Youth Advisory Council at my local LGBT Center, and continued my volunteer work at the zoo.I donʼt want this to sound like a resume, so let me also tell you a few interesting facts. I love llamas. My favourite colour is orange and my favourite food is gummy bears, especially the clear ones. Musical theatre regularly moves me to tears, much like the idea of leaving my bed in the morning. Iʼm a cat person. British television (and spelling) are my cup of tea, as is a hot, spicy Tazo chai.Now that Iʼve suitably factualized this space, Iʼll try to speak to you like a real person. I promise Iʼm not a robot.Itʼs an honour to be here, folks. Iʼve been writing as long as I can remember. As an angst-ridden teen, I wrote angst-written sonnets to my pain. As I started to grow, so did my writing. And now itʼs here, in all its glory, to share with you.
I hope to start a conversation. With my writing, I like to connect to people. I like to help people make their own connections. I like dialogue, and thatʼs what Iʼm here for. To start, to continue, and to encourage dialogue between girls and women, between males and females, between the shy and the bold. Anyone with a few good words is welcome to the table, but please, check your ego at the door.
Feminism is my chosen field for this. Civil rights is the biggest issue of the day, to me. These rights are so painfully obvious, and yet sometimes so painfully ignored. This is humankindʼs biggest crime throughout their years. But I can only speak so much on the struggles of people who I am not one of. As a woman, I can confidently give you my opinion on the way things are, with a bit of perspective thrown in. As a teenager, I can tell you how much everything totally sucks, guys—but perhaps a bit more eloquently, and a bit less extreme.I look forward to our discussions together. Have a great day everyone!
